Top Kitchen Tools Every Home Cook Should Have

by

Learning how to cook in the Rouxbe Cooking School is one thing – enjoying the task of cooking is another. Having the right tools is a big part of this. There are many gadgets on the market all designed to make you a “better cook”; yet, what you really need in the kitchen is the technique behind cooking and just a few basic tools.

For quite some time, people have been asking us what essential tools are required in the kitchen. So, for this technique Tuesday, we thought we’d cover some of the important kitchen tools that you need to perform the techniques taught in the school.

Here is a list of Video Drill-downs for some of our most used tools here at Rouxbe Central. Click on any photo to view each video.

Accurate measuring is key to success in the kitchen, especially when baking. Having a few sets of measuring cups and spoons allows you to execute the recipe that much quicker.

Tongs are like having an extra pair of hands in the kitchen. Scissors are indispensable for us here at Rouxbe. We use them for everything – from opening packages to cutting up poultry.

Spatulas will make sure you get every drop of that delicious cake batter and they also make for easier clean up. Even though there are heat-resistant spatulas on the market, there’s something nostalgic about having wooden spoons in the kitchen.

A good, sturdy cutting board is a MUST. Bench scrapers scoop, shovel, level, clean and cut.

Peelers make life easy and create less waste. Our favorite is the T-shaped peeler. Zesters are good for removing the zest from citrus fruit. They also come in hand when grating ginger, garlic or spices.

Thermometers take away the guesswork, so all of your hard labor doesn’t go to waste. Someone once said, “If you smell something burning, don’t bother running. It’s already too late”. Timers help you multi-task with success.

Strainers, spiders and ladles all help to strain, sift, lift and scoop.

Quality whisks are essential in order to whip anything from mayonnaise to meringue. Mashers and ricers help to make the fluffiest mashed potatoes and the most delicate gnocchi ever.

You don’t need to spend a fortune on these tools. Just make sure they are of good quality; otherwise, they can break when you need them most.

Happy Cooking!
