Sometimes, I eat Costco Hot Dogs

Someone recently asked us what kind of meals Dawn and I have.

Being a chef can really suck at times. First of all, you are rarely invited for dinner and when you are, you often end up cooking. Actually, I don’t really mind this. I remember once going over to someone’s place for dinner and when I walked in the door, they said, “Okay, the meat is in the fridge, vegetables are on the counter, help yourself to whatever you need in the cupboards and let me know if I can help. Want a glass of wine?”

So to dispel the myth that we eat five-star meals each day, here’s what Dawn and I had for meals over the last few days.

Monday

  • Breakfast: Coffee.
  • Lunch: A citrus-soya baked chicken. This was a Rouxbe test dish, and it didn’t make the cut with our test subjects: the rest of the Rouxbe Team.
  • Dinner: Thai prawn dish, test for shoot. This one rocked. Ate it late (9:30) while watching Medium and actually had to stop the show a few times to look at each other to talk about how good it was. We are shooting this simple dish for all.

Tuesday

  • Breakfast: A few slices of ham, straight out of the fridge. (we’re talking deli meat here, not honey roasted baked ham.)
  • Lunch: Baked chili ginger trout. The staff loved it a real winner, and easy. (You’ll have it soon.)
  • Dinner: This was a shopping day for this week’s recipe shoot, so after a 13-hour day we settled on a Costco hot dog on the way to the car. (I know. Sorry.)

Wednesday

  • Breakfast: nothing, coffee (got to start making time for breakfast)
  • Lunch: Test #2 of the Thai prawns, for the shoot tomorrow – only this time we made it for the whole team; all thumbs up. Of course, we had to make Thai chicken for Brad who doesn’t eat anything but chicken and for Elliot who doesn’t like prawns. And we had to tone down the heat for Patrick.
  • Dinner: Took a few slices of ham (same bag from Monday), spread out some fresh goat cheese, sun-dried tomatoes (We oven-dry our own fresh tomatoes; these were leftovers) and fresh cracked pepper, then rolled it up into a tube. We then placed the tube onto a Wasa cracker, made six of them (3 for each of us) then stood in front of the counter and ate them on the spot with a glass of 2001 Castell de Falset, while scripting out one of our instructional drill-downs.

So, that’s what we’ve had for dinner. How about you?

I love Costco hotdogs! Theres no shame in not being gourmet for every meal, especially given that Costco really is gourmet in terms of Hot dogs. You might also want to try TJ’s Fearless Franks or Paul Bertolli’s sausage. Not a Hot dog, but mighty fine, nonetheless
