Lifetime’s Back Baby! Announcing the Great Culinary Top-Up Campaign for Existing Students!

by · April 19, 2012

I know, I know…I can hear the customer comments already.

For those of you that might not know or remember what I’m referring to, we used to sell Lifetime Tuition Plans but canceled them for good back in September 2010.

So what happened you ask and why are we offering it again?

Over the last couple of years, not a week has gone by where we didn’t receive questions, comments and concerns from existing and prospective students that didn’t like the fact that they would lose access to their Rouxbe resource at the end of their payment cycle. While this is not unlike any recreational or professional cooking school where you go to a class, learn what you can in the time allocated and then back at home you are on your own, we have to say that we kind of agree.

At Rouxbe, we believe that culinary education can change lives. This is what we set out to do when created the site. We teach life skills and once those are learned, you have them for life. However, it is true that from time to time you may need a “refresher” to remind yourself of the key indicators and key steps necessary to perform a variety of cooking skills.

So that’s it. We agree. We hear you. We’re responding. But that’s not all…

Starting May 1, the Rouxbe Cooking School becomes a:

Premium Online Lifetime Cooking School.
Once you’re in, you’re in.

There will be two new tuition purchase options:

1. Lifetime Tuition Plan for $399.95 USD
(payable upfront in one single payment, save $100 off option #2)

2. Lifetime Tuition Payment Plan for $499.95 USD
($99.95 for the first month and then $33.33 for twelve consecutive months, cancel at anytime)

One other very important note:

Coming very soon, we will only be accepting a limited number of students each month. The reason for this is simple. Rouxbe never attempted to be the largest cooking site on the web. We set out to provide the very best online culinary education. And like any school, teacher to student ratio is a critical metric contributing to a student’s successful learning process. Rouxbe is now in over 180 countries, and in addition to the thousands of students we teach, we provide instructional video services to over 12,000 culinary students, work with universities, colleges, and provide training services to hospitals, hotels and restaurants. To ensure that we maintain the highest educational standard, we have decided that it’s critical that we scale our instructor team alongside our students, but this means limiting the number of available seats in the classroom. Stay tuned for more details regarding this, but rest assured that if you are already a student, you will, of course, continue to have full access to the school and our support services.

Introducing Learning Paths and “Certificates of Completion”

Over the next few months we’ll be rolling out our Version 3.0 Rouxbe Cooking School – an extremely ambitious and innovative site update that will completely transform online learning in the cooking space.

We have spent the last 18 months developing a new learning path feature. Essentially, learning paths are curriculum-driven classes or paths, that will walk students through our lessons and recipes to a variety of culinary end goals. For you, maybe this means that you’d like to follow the same path that a professional chef takes or maybe you’d just like to learn more about Culinary Basics, Knife Skills, Healthy Cooking, or Italian Cooking, etc. Each learning path will come with a specific task-by-task path guided by a Rouxbe Chef, additional assessment features and a “Certificate of Completion” at the end of the class.

Follow this blog, twitter or facebook as we’ll be releasing more information about this new feature over the course of the next two months.

As we move into our 7th year of operations, and the upcoming 4th anniversary of the “official” launch of our online cooking school, there is no doubt that 2012 is going to be an exciting year of content and feature releases. We hope you will agree.

Again, if you’d like to participate in this “Top-Up Campaign to Lifetime”, please monitor your inbox over the next week or contact our student support team.

We’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback by adding a comment below. Has Rouxbe helped you become a better cook?
Respectfully,

Joe Girard
Co-Founder of the Rouxbe Cooking School

    Hello Joe,

I have been a lifetime member for a few years now and am so happy to see Rouxbe offer this to more customers. You have great cooking lessons that have giving me the confidence in the kitchen that I’ve never had before. Rouxbe is a solid company and you are so in touch with your customers. Keep up the excellent job you and all the Rouxbe staff are doing.

  2. Mark Williams says:

    Dear Rouxbe,
The life-time membership sounds really advantageous. I will definitely take the time to sign up. As it is now, I haven’t even finished all the lessons and practices that are taught in the classes I have signed up for. It will take me a life time to complete the course. So thanks for the opportunity. Sincerely, Mark

  3. Paul. Cobbin says:

I am interested how much would I owe as I am a. Current. Member?

  4. Atam says:

This is the one thing that has been holding me back from joining, so I’m thrilled to see the lifetime option.

I can’t seem to figure out whether there are any advantages to joining before May 1st versus waiting until afterwards. Either way the cost ends up being $399, correct? Does getting in before May 1st guarantee me some of grandfather clause for coming changes? Can anyone help clarify this? Thanks!

  5. Chris says:

    Hello,

By signing up to the lifetime member plan, will we have access to all new videos or what you have currently in the website?

    Chris

  10. Vicki says:

    Joe,
I received my email with my credit amount ($49.95). If I paid $100 for a six month subscription (through a RueLaLa voucher) why do I only get half of my payment as credit.
I would like to upgrade to the Lifetime. I’m only a month into my six month subscription and am loving my classes….please give me credit for my $100 just paid.

  11. Dan Vasquez says:

Thanks for the offer for lifetime membership. The short notice concerns me, I would like to have had more time to think this through. I have received other such offers that just do not sound right. I love this online school and think the world of it. I have sent many friends and people I have met through food to your sight. I just like to have time to think things throuh, it doesn’t matter what the cost. I want to believe that you will be around for a while. Thanks again.
    Harry

  14. Elaine McLaughlin says:

I joined Rouxbe a very long time ago and joined for a lifetime. I cannot remember what year nor what I paid…though I recall it was a great price. Will you please email me answers to the following:
    the year I joined
what I paid at the time for my lifetime membership
will the new changes have any impact on me…either by price or being able to access all I’ve enjoyed in the past.
I’ve had a ton of fun with this site and have learned so so much.
    Thanks.

  15. David Milroy says:

    Hi Joe,

I have been a life-time member since April 2010 and have never regretted the investment. I can’t always access Rouxbe as frequently as I would like, due to travel/business commitments. But I have never regretted that decision. The lessons are absolutely top-notch. I consider myself a fairly seasoned amateur cook, having taken many courses at Toronto’s George Brown College Culinary School over the years. And cooking is one of my passions and means of relaxation and entertainment. And yet, I never fail to learn something with every lesson I take on Rouxbe.
After your stock lessons, I now take the time to make my own stocks and demi-glace. I know exactly what the ingredients are and the amount of salt etc. that has been added. And they are far better tasting than store-bought versions. The demi-glace adds a gourmet restaurant taste to all of my meat dishes that blows away my guests, and frankly, me as well when I cook dishes that are anointed with this wonderful elixir. Thanks for that gem of learning. I would have bought Rouxbe for that alone. But everything else added makes this such a wonderful resource and a true educational bargain. George Brown College was good, with the hands-on (and not having to clean the pots at the end of the class), but with your practice exercises, we get all of that and more. (I do have to clean my own pots and pans, unless I can convince my wife to do it for me. Sometimes that works, and sometimes it doesn’t.)

Your offering a conversion to life-time status for members with other plans is beyond fair and equitable. My advice to anyone sitting on the fence about taking that leap of faith converting to life-time status? Go for it, with no regrets. You will be thrilled with your decision.

You guys are truly awesome. Both in the content of your site and in the way you treat your customers. I look forward to learning with you into the future.

It has been a pleasure to be a member of the Rouxbe family for the past two years. Anyone passionate about cooking who doesn’t take advantage of your resource, and the life-time membership offering that you have recently introduced, must be crazy!

    Thanks again.

    David

  16. Luke C says:

Helo Joe (and the entire Rouxbe team),

I signed up in December of last year and paid for a yearly membership – and I have LOVED working through your lessons and also trying out my newly learnt skills in my kitchen.

I have just upgraded to lifetime membership, and thanks for the credit for my fees already paid – really appreciate that.

I am looking forward to the new Rouxbe and learning so much more and of course cooking more delicious food.

I mentioned through the help section about the need for some more basic skills lessons, including a food safety lesson. Steve Ellis replied that such a lesson was on the way, but I have not seen it. I trust the “culinary basics” will include this sort of information?

Either way – keep up the amazing work and thanks for the lifetime membership option!

    Regards,

    Luke

My Comment 142 has the following note: “Your comment is waiting moderation.” I don’t know what this means. It’s the only comment on the list with this notation.
I was hoping you would check my account and see that I paid $100 so that I could have full credit toward the life time membership.
Time is running out and I haven’t received an email with any additional information.
I would like to upgrade to the life time membership during the promotional timeframe.

  18. Denise says:

While I understand how this affects lifetime members, how does it affect someone who purchases on lesson at a time?

    • Hi Denise,

No change for you as long as you were a previous a la carte purchaser. It is no longer an option for new users. You should still see the buy button on lesson tiles as you did before.

      Cheers, Joe.

  19. Barbara says:

I just read this notice today and do not know where I STAND. I know I have paid more than 399.99 in the past, but have no prof. Do you know my status?
