Great Cookbook for a Gift

I say, this is a great book to give as a gift, as I was recently given this book as a gift (thanks again, Paul) and I love it – a cookbook written by chef owner David Chang and David Meehan called Momofuku.

One of things I enjoy most about this cookbook is the way it is written. It is more like a book, rather than just a cookbook full of recipes. It has a very personal, almost conversational tone to it. David talks about each recipe, explaining where it may have come from or the story behind it.

Here is a picture of one of the recipes featured in the book. The picture, however, is not from the book - it’s from a blog called Bon Appétempt.  Amelia actually attempts to re-create recipes from various chefs, cookbooks and magazines…in some cases, food styling and all…very funny! This is her attempt at the shrimp and grits from Momofuku.Momofuku Shrimp and Grits

This is what the first part of her post said “This attempt involved improvisation, persistence, discipline and endurance. Welcome to the culinary athletic super zone!”

Anyways, I would highly recommend this book – if you don’t mind the odd swear word that is. The recipes all sound delicious and many of them are on my “must-try” list in the New Year. One in particular is the slow-poached egg, which they use to garnish many of their dishes.

Although “Momofuku” literally translates to “lucky-peach”, I do not believe it was luck that made him successful, instead it was hard work, good cooking and his ability to think outside the box.  Here is a link to David on wikipedia. Take a look at the awards section to see what I mean.

Ciao for now!

I know “Momofuku” does sound rather nasty on it’s own :-)

There was a nice little interview with this chef on last week’s episode of the show A Spendid Table. They have a recipe from the book on their site right now, if interested. It’s a recipe for one of the more popular menu items, Fried (or Roasted) Cauliflower with Fish Sauce Vinaigrette, if anyone’s interested. You can find it at splendidtable.org

Dawn — glad you enjoyed the book. Leora is loving it as well, particularly because it is such an interesting read.
